I remember standing on a beach in Northland, talking with a stranger I had just met there - we were the only ones on a 3 mile stretch of white sand. He told me these cuts were happening in Canada, and I could see the signs we were heading the same way. That was in 1996 - it's taking longer than I anticipated.
